In Requiem

Belacqua is in mourning and too stoned to see the keyboard let alone use it.

I agree 150% with David M.

This illustration sums it up perfectly. -- http://www.rense.com/1.imagesH/deesvote.jpg

And here are some quotes to cheer you up Dear Belacqua. Please realize that your advice is still going to be as urgently needed as ever.

"The men the American people admire most extravagantly are the most daring liars; the men they detest most violently are those who try to tell them the truth."
--H. L. Mencken

"Those who know the least obey the best."
--George Farquhar

"Our leaders are cruel because only those willing to be inordinately cruel and remorseless can hold positions of leadership in the foreign policy establishment. People capable of expressing a full human measure of compassion and empathy toward faraway powerless strangers do not become president of the United States, or vice president, or secretary of state, or national security adviser or secretary of the treasury. Nor do they want to."
--William Blum

"Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job."
--Douglas Adams

"The United States is a society in which people not only can get by without knowing much about the wider world but are systematically encouraged not to think independently or critically, and instead to accept the mythology of the United States as a benevolent, misunderstood giant as it lumbers around the world trying to do good."
--Robert Jensen

"The point of public relations slogans like "Support our troops" is that they don't mean anything... That's the whole point of good propaganda. You want to create a slogan that nobody's going to be against, and everybody's going to be for. Nobody knows what it means, because it doesn't mean anything. Its crucial value is that it diverts your attention from a question that does mean something: Do you support our policy? That's the one you're not allowed to talk about."
--Noam Chomsky

"The corporate grip on opinion in the United States is one of the wonders of the Western world. No First World country has ever managed to eliminate so entirely from its media all objectivity — much less dissent."
--Gore Vidal

"I have little belief in human progress. The human race is incurably idiotic. It will never be happy."
--H.L. Mencken

"Stupidity cannot be cured with money, or through education, or by legislation. Stupidity is not a sin; the victim can't help being stupid. But stupidity is the only universal capital crime; the sentence is death, there is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity."
--Lazarus Long (Robert A. Heinlein, fictional character)

"Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats."
--Robert A. Heinlein

Dave, Jason, Lynn,

You're quite right, it will be business as usual, which is why Belacqua isn't going away.

Hey! Stop being Nostradamus(es) for a bit, people. At least give the man a chance to give the old heave ho! Maybe a week! Then, by all means smack him upon his head with your crack pipes!
